Under the kings David and Solomon of the house of Judah (c. 1000 BCE) the twelve tribes were united in the Kingdom of Israel. After the death of Solomon, son of David (922 BCE), the kingdom was divided: Isreal to the north and Judah to the south. The Assyrians destroyed Israel (c.722 BCE) and refugees fled from Israel to Judah. During the reign of Hezekiah (14th king of Judah BCE 715-687) Sargon of Assyriah captured the Judea fortress of Lachish and laid seige to Jerusalem.

Eventually all of the Land of Canaan was overrun by the Babylonians (c. 597 BCE).
